Laptop Docking Stations – What’s Around and Which One?

It’s not hard to see that desktop computers are slowly becoming redundant in favour of portable laptop computers. A laptop docking station allows the laptop computer to replicate a desktop in terms of functionality, while maintaining the portable nature of the notebook. The restriction on laptops are that there are only a limited number of access points and when connecting hardware, need to have each hardware element re-connected after each relocation.

The most obvious benefit of a notebook docking station is that you can plug hardware devices such as printers, scanners, keyboards, speakers, joysticks, microphones and webcams, into the docking station. This allows for all peripherals to be connected to your laptop once it is connected to the docking station.

Another benefit of attaching your notebook to a station is the ergonomic benefit, as many are elevated to save looking down and working in uncomfortable and un-adjustable positions. There is also the option to attach additional RAM, expansion cards and sockets that work alongside the portable computers components.

Due to the boom in laptop sales, most computer manufacturers also make docking stations. Hewlett Packard has a range available depending on the size and features available, such as the HP EN489AA docking station. Stations can also come with or without a stand, and variable elevation levels. Targus Universal Notebook Docking Stations also have an ExpressCard connection which is faster than the standard USB connection.

Other brands like Acer, ASUS, Belkin, Fujitsu, Kensington, Lenovo, Logitec, Motion Computing, OQO, Panasonic, Sony and Toshiba, all produce multiple lines of desktop docking systems. Prices range from around $150 for a basic station such as a Kensington Notebook Expansion Dock to $900 for a OQO 02 Docking station with DVD/RW.

For those with Apple Macs there aren’t so many options. As Macs don’t have a docking connector, they have the choice of Apple docking stations or for compatible Mac and MacBooks manufacturers such as Oyster have the Oysterdock Universal Station, into which your notebook drops into the station almost vertically.

Overall, laptop docking stations are a must have accessory for those who want multiple peripheral connections and expansion options for their laptop whilst maintaining the natural portability of the notebook computer.
